5 Personal Goals & Why I Keep Reaching
Being a single mom is HARD, and can be even harder when you work full time. I have found a few things that keep me reaching. I say reaching instead of going because, Emma keeps me going! The things that keep me reaching? Those are personal goals I had long before Emma was born.
1. Working for Myself - I have worked for a few big corporations in my adult life including Bank of America, TD Bank, and of course my current company which I love. Don't get me wrong, I adore my team. I love the perks of working for another company. The stress is much easier to manage when you work for someone else, and I will truly miss that when I am able to work for myself full time. The idea of answering to nobody but myself though, that's liberating. It's a game changer for anyone. I remind myself every day that what I do now is to pave the way of working for myself so that one day I can work from where I want, or so I can visit my family up North with Emma at any given moment and not lose time at work. Ultimately it's about the freedom.
2. A Second Property - This is one of my favorites, and I have actually talked to some of my girls about going in on this with me. With most of us living away from our hometown, we want a place to go back to when all our parents retire and move away. I NEED a house in Maine. NEED IT. I just imagine being able to bring Emma up there in the summer, having a little place on the lake or the ocean and enjoying a relaxing week with her, where she will get to experience the magic of Maine as a child just like I did.
3. Traveling with Emma - Traveling is kind of a part of working for myself, but it's special because I want to be able to do it with my daughter. My parents didn't have the means to send us to Europe or take us all over the country growing up. We went many places, and they introduced me to a lot of culture in the surrounding areas, but I would love to be able to show Emma different countries and experience those things with her for the first time. I also don't picture myself as very relaxed when working for myself, in which case this is a totally separate goal.
4. Get In The Best Shape of My Life - This is an ongoing goal, but I feel like I have actually gotten better at this since having a baby. Most women struggle to get their body back after a baby but for me, it has been the best challenge EVER. I love how hard it is. I've always loved the gym, and I now I work out at home to accommodate my schedule as a single working mom. After Emma is asleep, I head to the garage with the baby monitor and some music and I kill a HIIT workout, along with some other stuff which I will go into detail about in another post at a later date. I'm actually in better shape than I was before I even got pregnant, but the idea was to start eating all organic and healthy so that when Emma hits the table food age, I can cook one meal for the both of us. Also to look and feel good because, who DOESN'T want that for themselves?
5. Live Actively - Also part of getting in shape, living actively is something I have pushed for even more since Emma was born. I take her to state parks, for long walks, and to different events in the city to keep us active. When she's older I plan on hiking with her and taking her to different state parks around the country. There's so much beauty out there and I hope she grows up with a love for experiencing it all.
